The Area

Evran is the nearest small town 5km from Le Quiou and is
the point at which the River Rance meets the River Linon,
creating a series of canals, locks and bridges.

The tow path makes a wonderful walk or cycle on either side of the canal
and links with many villages along the way. Evran has a supermarket,
a butcher, a baker, a post office, a bank with a cashpoint and a
selection of bars and restaurants.

The small villages surrounding Le Quiou each have their own individual
appeal. Trefumel with its fine examples of local stone (pierre de Jauge) architecture and impressive 11th century Sainte Agnes church. St Juvat with its 16th and 17th century character houses and its numerous awards for floral displays throughout the village. St Pern with it spectacular walled convent and the St Joseph tower. There is also Becherel, one of the 'Cite du Livre' a Book Village of europe, where there are more books in the village than people! One of the highest points (176m) in the area and a former military stronghold with a turbulent past, Becherel is a wonderful collection of historical buildings affording panoramic views over the Rance valley.

Further afield towards the coast is Dinan, situated upriver on the Rance estuary. This textile-producing, fortified town with its 13th century ramparts is now famous for its 15th century half-timbered houses and cobbled streets leading down to the old Port.

Dinard and St Malo are perhaps the nearest stretch of coastline. Dinard with its English-influenced architecture, 1950's style beach alongside galleries, shops, casino and restaurants is entertainment with or without sunshine. St Malo, too, with its ramparts and maritime history, fine architecture, shops and coffee houses is a perfect setting to watch the world go by.

The coastline, of course, stretches well beyond in both directions, with an impressive mix of rocky outcrops and beaches, towns and villages each with their own character and history.

There will always be reasons to come to Brittany!
